Gas Prices

Hope you enjoy this week's "Tastes Like Chicken" cartoon... just a little commentary on the price of gas:

A little fun fact about this one... the colors I used for the Gas Station are the common comic book villian colors... heh heh heh.

In other news, gearing up for an evening of laughs tonight as Chris Quimby opens for Brian Regan. And my stomach is already in knots preparing for my performance in tomorrow comedy competition. I practiced a few times in front of Amy last night and the good news... SHE LAUGHED! She's my biggest fan and toughest critic, so that was really good (plus she's heard a few of the bits before... a few times....)... Anyway, Watch for the update about that either this weekend or Monday! Woo-woo

Jeanne d'Arc

This was done as an entry for a challenge to draw "Joan of Arc". This was my submission:
This was one of those drawing that just happened to happen. Meaning, I drew this in the corner of one of my doodle pages... so that's why there's the cut off just below the waist. I'm hoping to splash some color on it, so I'll post the results if and when I do!

Thanks for stopping by!

Home Show Hand Cramp

Well Blogger was having technical issues yesterday, so I had to postpone the update to today... anyway... Big thanks to the folks who came to the Home Show last Saturday! I think I did about 40 marker sketches in 2 hours... so that left my hand a bit cramped and my head swirling. It was a BLAST! Loved taking the requests from the kids (and adults), I drew Spiderman Chickens, Batman Chickens, Chickens fishing, I had a kid ask for a "Chicken driving a John Deere Tractor", did my first Chicken as a fairy (Tinkerbell), a chicken jedi... one of my favorites was a request for a "Chicken SpongeBob" (her sister requested a "Chicken Patrick") Since I don't have the original sketch, I re-did what it looked like quickly with a pen:

Haha! Fun Stuff! So not only did I do that this weekend, I also completed my biggest Sketch-It request yet... TWENTY ONE individual sketches of players from a soccer team. What a great exercise that was trying to do all those kids (and 3 adults) quickly while maintaining the look of the individuals... phew! And the good news was that the person who requested the sketches paid me the great compliment of saying they were able to identify the kids without referencing the photos! So I was able to capture the likenesses! Woo-hoo! That was cool.

Anyway, gearing up for this Friday night's comedy competition, gotta tweak my set a bit and I think I'm ready to go! Should be fun!

Spiderman: Spider-Clan

Spiderman: Legend of the Spider-Clan was a brief series (which I believe) was born from the Marvel "Mangaverse" line.... either way. I recently came across an image an artist had done of the Spider-Clan Spidey on one of the art forums I frequent. Liking it alot, I sent the artist a request for a hi-res version I could try to color, he kindly obliged posting a link to the file, and I took a stab at coloring it! This was what I came up with:

Pencils/Inks: "Rabbling"
Colors:Me

Quick reminder: tomorrow I'll be at the Home Show (2-4)! Hope to see you there!

Do or Donuts

Ah....the yummy fried dough treat. This week's comic was one of those "Eleventh Hour" completions. Due to the hectic work week(s) and such, this comic was done the evening before it was needed for publication in "The Weekly". So you could understand how as it approached midnight, I was sick of seeing this cartoon and not liking how it was turning out. The next morning however, provided a fresh perspective, and I didn't hate it as much as I thought. Anyway, hope you enjoy it!

This cartoon was inspired by the "Donuts" bit that Brian Regan performs (you can see pieces of it at the Experience Brian section of his website, scroll down to "Concession Standup: Donuts". I mentioned last week (or the one before that.... I don't remember), Brian Regan will be performing in Orono on April 27, and the very funny Chris Quimby will be opening for him! Chris is also MCing the Comedy Institute I'm performing at next Friday (April 28), should be really fun!

Home Show

So things are beginning to wrap-up around work, seeing the light at the end of the tunnel (wondering if it's an oncoming train). So that's good. Haven't had much time to draw lately (other than this week's cartoon that I'll post tomorrow and a few quickies for Sketch-It) I'm gearing up for this Saturday...

"What's happening this Saturday?" you may be wondering... well... this weekend is the Bangor Home Show (convention-type deal for home products etc.), and the Bangor Daily News always has a booth there. This year they're sponsoring me to be there from 2PM-4PM where I will be doing marker sketches of chickens (what did you expect). They're making up some special 5.5"x8.5" Sketch cards for me to doodle on... here's what those cards look like:

Not only are they providing sketch cards for me, you could also enter to win some TLC merchandise (a t-shirt)! So if you're in the area and planning on attending the Home Show (at the Bangor Auditorium/Civic Center), definitely stop by and say hello!

Until next time.....

Rotten!

Welcome to another addition to "Tastes Like Chicken" (hey, that's got a certain ring to it!). This week's cartoon is... well... I think you'll get it:

Hope you enjoy it!

This week is pretty much gone how I've thought it was gonna go. Crazy at work (I've been living here the last couple days (or at least it feels that way) and I've been working at home on a few extra projects. I started the planning/idea phase for this year's corn maze for Treworgy Orchards (I designed their maze last year, you can see it at their site) and other fun stuff.

I'm gearing up for the Amateur Comedy Competition, the Comedy Institute on April 28th. It should be fun. I'm planning on shooting some video which I'll try to post a few clips of (like I did here)

Also, if you're planning on attending the Home Show at the Bangor Auditorium/Civic Center next weekend, I'll be at the Bangor Daily News booth on the Saturday (April 22) from 2pm-4pm. More details about that next week.

As always, thanks for stopping by! Have a great day!

Sketch-It

So let's pretend you have a dollar (which you may very well have), and you're thinking to yourself "Man! What can I spend this dollar on?" You think maybe something off the dollar menu at a fast-food restaurant, but you're not that hungry. So whaddya gonna do? How about get a quick sketch?

This past weekend I became a contributor at Sketch-It, a site where you can do just that. The deal is you pay a dollar, give a description of what you want, and you are guaranteed that an artist will spend a minute on that quick sketch (sometimes a little more, never less) "What?" you may ask... "A Minute? What can be done in a minute?"... well that's all part of the fun! I'd imagine it's an adrenaline rush, sorta like buying a lottery ticket.

I recieved and completed my first assignment this weekend. You can see it at the Sketch-It site. Hop over there for more information, and if you do want to take part and want me to sketch something, be sure to request me! (oh, and I'll add that I am available for commission work, the cost is more than a dollar (cause I'll spend more time on it), for details just send me an email!)

Other than that, not much else to report. Had a fun busy weekend. I'm gearing up for a hectic week here at work, I hope I'm wrong about the impending doom I'm feeling....

Manos the Magician

As you might know (if you've seen my Houdini cartoon), I'm a fan of magicians. So when the guys over at Horrorwood (a comic book murder mystery mini series set in 1950's hollywood) posted their pin-up contest and I noticed one of the characters was a magician.... I decided to take a go at it. This was my submission of Manos:

Overall I was pretty psyched about how it came out. The right hand and skull are pretty wonky, but overall I really like it (which is always good). From what I hear, I think this may show up in issue four! I based this off of an old poster I saw for Thurston the magician. Hope you enjoy it!

Oh yeah... and a BIG OL congrats to my buddy Chris Quimby! Remember that performace from a few weeks ago he had recorded hoping to possibly open for Brian Regan? Well he is... WOOO-HOOOOO!

Have a great weekend!

Getting booked

The topic for this week's Tastes Like Chicken comic was "Library". My first thought was to do a play on words type thing with the Dewey Decimal system and Huey, Dewey and Louie (the ducks)... but I didn't go for my first thought this week. This was the second idea I had:

If you couldn't read the verbage on the side of the cartoon, it reads "Apologies to Hasbro... and librarians".

One of my favorite writers and collaborators just started his blog the other day, John Gunningham, the other half of 4th Watch Studios. He's got a few descriptions of some of the things he's been working on as well as a great description for our epic project we've been working on for a while now (you can read more about that over at the 4th Watch Studio space. Please pardon our dust as we construct the site)

This week has been a great drawing week, tune in tomorrow for another piece of art (I'm pretty pleased with it). Later!

Nightcrawler: Take 2

After a few comments/crits/suggestions I recieved on my first Nightcrawler, I was encouraged enough to give him another go. This version is a more acrobatic, monkey-like tailed, non-fart like BAMF version that was supposed to have better fingers (in this case toes):

I was going for the movie style BAMF in this version... I think I came close, I've gotta tweak a few things to pull it off though. I've recieved some helpful comments and tips on this one too so I think a third try is in the works...

Also, I think John and I will be ready to unveil our mini-site for our '4th Watch Studios'. Be on the look out for that in the coming days...

There's fire... on HIS SHOULDER

One of my favorite things to do is stumble across other artists sites and view their work, and it's even cooler when that work inspires, that was the case when I stumbled upon Randy Hayes's sketchfolio. One of his entries sparked my imagination and I took a few minutes to splash some color on it. He's posted on his and I thought I'd post it here:
Pencils: Randy Hayes
Colors: Me

I love the animated look and feel of this drawing...

In other news, this week is looking pretty productive art-wise. I just finished inking another Nightcrawler this morning and am hoping to add some color on it in the next few days! Woo-hoo! Thanks for stopping by.

BAMF!

Welcome to an hour more of sunlight! Hope everyone enjoyed their weekend. After the sprinkles Saturday morning it turned into a beautiful afternoon. I took some time to draw this weekend, noticed a favorite character of mine was the topic of this week's character jam at the Drawing Board, Nightcrawler! So I thought I'd give him a go. This is what I came up with:
Pencils:

And then the inks and colors:

I was very pleased with how this came out, the colors could be much better (as someone's already observed... the teleport smoke effect could look less like a fart). I've recieved some really encouraging crits on some other art forums and I think I'm gonna do another version sometime this week (that's my goal anyway... we'll see if that happens) If anyone else is interested in coloring this one, shoot me an email and I can send you my hi-res inks. Have a great Monday!
